  • Philippine IT Update / June 30, 1997 - ISPs to form local Internet exchange.   PHILIPPINE Internet Service Providers (ISPs) now have the capacity to increase access speeds and improve packaged services with the establishment of the Philippine Internet Exchange (PhIX) to be announced this week
  • Malaya / July 5, 1997 -  PLDT launches first Internet backbone.  Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. recently launched the country’s first internet exchange or access point which will improve current internet routing.
  • Manila Standard / July 5, 1997  - PLDT facility to ease traffic on info highway. Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), the country’s largest phone provider, spent P16.2 million for the first local Internet exchange (IX) that is meant to reduce the traffic on the local information highway.

  • Philippine Daily Inquirer / July 5, 1997  -  Internet exchange launched. TELECOMS giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. launched the other day its $600,000 internet exchange which would ensure faster internet transactions and cheaper cost of accessing information technology.
  • Philippine Star / July 5, 1997  - PLDT launches 1st Philippine Internet hub. The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) launched yesterday the country’s first Internet hub to serve as a common network that could link all local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) together.
  • Manila Bulletin / July 6, 1997  - Five ISPs join PLDT’s Internet exchange. The country’s first Internet backbone called Philippine Internet Exchange (PhIX) was launched by Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) on Thursday with the first five major Internet service providers (ISPs) connected to the hub.
  • Money Asia / July 7, 1997 -  PLDT sets up RP Internet Exchange.  Philippine Long Distance Company (PLDT) has launched the service Internet eXchange (PhIX), which allows interconnection and the exchange of domestic transactions among Internet Service Providers (ISP).
  • Manila Times / July 9, 1997  - AT LAST, INTERNET FIRMS SET UP LOCAL LINKS. Telecommunications giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) has launched an Internet hub that will allow initially five major ISPs to exchange local data traffic.

With the establishment of the first local Internet backbone, the Philippine Internet Exchange (PhIX), the country has moved closer to becoming one of Asia's Internet hub, according to the Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Co.   • Computer World / July 31, 1997  - Philippine Internet Exchange launched. INTERNET service providers will now be able to move local Internet traffic without bouncing content out of the country with the launch this month of the Philippine Internet Exchange (PhIX).
  • Asian Business Review / September 1997  -  PLDT fast tracks the Internet in the Philippines.  The internet has been fast tracked in the Philippines by a new Internet eXchange service built by the country’s leading telecommunications company, PLDT.
